Driving Lesson Prep: Your 2026 Guide to Calm, Confident Starts

So, you’ve finally booked your first lesson with Drivetime. Whether you’re learning in a Manual or Automatic car, those first-day nerves are completely normal. Since 1987, we’ve helped thousands of West London and Berkshire students move from the passenger seat to the driver's seat with ease.

To help you arrive ready, we’ve put together the ultimate checklist for your introductory session in Hounslow, Maidenhead, or Ealing.

1. The Essential Paperwork (Don’t Leave Home Without It!)

Before your 1:1 tuition can legally begin, your instructor must verify your details.

  • Provisional Licence: You must present your photocard licence. No licence, no lesson—it’s the law!

  • The "Check Code": Have your DVSA check code ready. This allows us to verify your driving record instantly on the GOV.UK website.

2. The 20-Metre Eyesight Test

Safety is our "Gold Standard." Your instructor will ask you to read a standard UK number plate from a distance of 20 metres.

  • Pro-Tip: If you wear glasses or contact lenses for distance, make sure they are on! If you struggle with the plate, we cannot proceed with the lesson.

3. Dress for Pedal Control

You wouldn’t run a marathon in flip-flops, and you shouldn’t learn to drive in them either.

  • Footwear: Wear flat-soled, comfortable shoes (trainers are perfect). Avoid heavy boots or high heels, as these make it difficult to feel the "biting point" or apply smooth braking.

  • Clothing: Wear something non-restrictive. You’ll be reaching for the gear stick (in manual cars) and checking your blind spots frequently.

4. What Happens in the First Hour?

Don't worry—we won't throw you straight onto the A4 Great West Road or the Hogarth Flyover!

  • The Quiet Zone: Your instructor will drive you to a quiet residential area (like the backstreets of Osterley or Heston) where traffic is minimal.

  • The Cockpit Drill (DSSSM): We’ll teach you how to make the car yours. You’ll learn the Doors, Seat, Steering, Seatbelt, and Mirrors routine.

  • The Controls: We’ll walk you through the "CBA" of pedals (Clutch, Brake, Accelerator) and the basics of moving off and stopping safely.

5. Mental Prep: Focus Over Fear

  • Rest Up: Driving takes intense concentration. Get a good night’s sleep and avoid alcohol the night before.

  • Trust the Dual Controls: Every Drivetime car is fitted with dual controls. If you make a mistake, your expert instructor can take over in a split second. You are in safe hands.
